A black chawan by Inoue Hochiku of the Inami kiln, carrying the weight and presence of contained fire.
The glaze is not uniform black but a living surface — sandy, gritty, speckled with mineral inclusions that catch light at close range. This is darkness with texture, a surface that asks to be held rather than observed from a distance. The rounded form sits with gravity and conviction, broad enough to cradle comfortably in both palms.
Kuro-chawan — black tea bowls — occupy a specific position in chanoyu. They concentrate attention inward. Against this darkness, the green of whisked matcha becomes vivid, almost luminous. The bowl becomes a frame for the tea itself.
Hochiku's approach at Inami kiln favors directness over refinement. The sandy texture in the glaze speaks of high-temperature kiln atmosphere and a clay body that contributes its own mineral character to the fired surface.
Accompanied by tomobako (artist-signed wooden box).
Dimensions:
• Diameter: approx. 12 cm (4.7 in)
• Height: approx. 7.5 cm (3.0 in)
Condition: No chips, no cracks. The textured glaze is fully intact.
