Fire made this decision. Bizen clay — dense, unglazed, born from ancient lake sediment — entered the kiln and emerged transformed: warm amber at the shoulder, descending through deep brown and charcoal, then breaking open into ash-blue where the kiln atmosphere touched it. This is called de-sai, the color of emergence. Yamamoto Izuru is a designated holder of Okayama Prefecture's Important Intangible Cultural Property. The bowl in your hands carries that recognition.
[ BASIC DETAILS ]
• Artist: Yamamoto Izuru (山本出) — Okayama Prefecture Designated Important Intangible Cultural Property Holder
• Ware: Bizen-yaki (備前焼), de-sai (出彩) kiln-change variation
• Dimensions: width approximately 12 cm, height approximately 7.5 cm
• Condition: Good vintage condition
• Provenance: Signed wooden box (tomobako) and cloth (tomobukuro) included, artist biography included
[ CULTURAL CONTEXT ]
Bizen ware requires no glaze. The clay — aged for years before throwing — carries within it the minerals that interact with flame, ash, and atmosphere to produce all color. The kiln fires for ten days or more; the position of each piece determines its surface. Yamamoto Izuru's de-sai work intentionally seeks the blue-grey kiln changes that occur at specific atmospheric moments. This is not accidental; it is understanding the kiln well enough to invite accident in the right direction.
[ DEEP DIVE ]
The interior reveals the clay's character without distraction: a continuous warm brown that shows the throwing rings, the mineral sheen where the surface became almost vitrified. The exterior carries the de-sai effect in a diagonal band — ash-blue against burnt ochre, with darker charcoal passages where reduction was deepest. The form is substantial, wide-mouthed, and comfortable in two hands. A tea bowl meant to be held.
