A chestnut. The form is precise — the pointed tip, the rounded base, the slight flattening where it would rest in the hand. It is not a chestnut's likeness. It is a chestnut, held in lacquer.
Kanshitsu: layers of lacquer-saturated hemp cloth, built without a wooden core. The resulting object is almost weightless — fifteen grams. It is the memory of a form, not the form itself.
The surface is deep brown, still. The gloss does not call attention to itself.
Kaga nuri. The tradition of the Kaga domain, Ishikawa Prefecture. Discipline and precision as its inheritance.
