A kensui by Aoyagi Suiho of Akogi kiln, shaped as a gourd (hyotan) and finished in Takatori's signature flowing glaze.

The glaze moves. Amber and dark brown cascade down the exterior walls in long, unhurried runs — each one tracing the path gravity took during firing. Where the flow thickens, the color deepens. Where it thins, warm tones emerge beneath. This is Takatori's defining character: a glaze that appears still but records motion.

Turn the vessel over and the interior reveals celadon green — a cooler, quieter world inside. The contrast between the exterior's warm drama and the interior's calm restraint is deliberate. It mirrors the kensui's function: receiving what the tea ceremony discards, holding it without complaint.

The hyotan (gourd) form has deep roots in Japanese aesthetic tradition — a shape associated with abundance, continuity, and the passage between worlds. Here it is abstracted into a vessel that balances visual weight with functional proportion.

Takatori ware originated under Korean potter Hachizo in 1600, established under the patronage of Kuroda lords in Fukuoka. Akogi kiln continues that lineage with authority.
