A hand-built aka raku chawan in a palette that resists easy naming — something between blush, salmon, and the flush of fired iron oxide pulled back from flame. The crazing network maps the entire surface, interior and exterior alike, a fine web of intentional fracture that accumulates silence with each handling.

The form is direct: a generous, slightly irregular mouth that invites the whisk, walls that taper toward a compact foot ring cut from stiff clay without apology. This is a raku chawan that holds its heat briefly and surrenders it, the way all raku does — a vessel that participates in the tea rather than merely containing it.

◆ About Aka Raku
Raku ceramics trace their lineage to 16th-century Kyoto, where the first generation of the Raku family shaped bowls by hand for the tea master Sen no Rikyu. Aka raku — "red raku" — achieves its warm iron-tinged palette through a lower firing temperature that preserves the red clay body beneath the glaze. The crazing, called kanyu in Japanese, is not a flaw: it is the evidence of time, of glaze and clay contracting at different rates, recording the moment the bowl was born.

◆ Cultural Significance
The tea bowl is the most considered object in the chanoyu tradition. Of all ceramic forms, the chawan has absorbed more philosophical weight, more written commentary, more deliberate imperfection than any other vessel in Japanese material culture. To hold a raku chawan is to hold the accumulated weight of four centuries of deliberate simplicity.
