This aka-e chawan carries the quiet confidence of a piece made to be used. The red overglaze enamel traces each petal with a brush that knows when to stop. Green leaves punctuate the white ground, and a thin red line at the shoulder closes the composition without ceremony.
In the Japanese tea tradition, the aka-e style — overglaze red enamel on white porcelain — belongs to a lineage stretching back to Kakiemon and Ko-Kutani. What distinguishes Baien's interpretation is restraint: where others fill the surface, this bowl breathes.
The interior is undecorated white — a deliberate choice. When matcha is prepared, the bright green against the white becomes the final element of the composition.
