A kensui — the water-waste vessel of the tea ceremony — from Agano ware, Koshin-gama, the work of Takatsuru Chizan. An ash glaze in turquoise and moss pools thick at the rim and descends in broken, unrepeating sheets, halting above an unglazed foot of pale, coarse-grained clay. The vessel is accompanied by its original signed wooden box (tomobako), inscribed by the potter's own hand.
🔹 [ BASIC DETAILS ]
• Artist: Takatsuru Chizan (高鶴智山)
• Kiln: Koshin-gama (庚申窯), Agano ware
• Technique: Ash-drip glaze over wheel-thrown stoneware
• Origin: Agano, Fukuoka Prefecture, Japan
• Dimensions: Height approx. 8 cm / Diameter approx. 13 cm
• Box: Original signed wooden tomobako, inscribed "庚申作" with red seal
• Condition: No chips or cracks
🔹 [ CULTURAL & ARTISTIC INSIGHT ]
Within the tea room, the kensui holds no tea at all. It is the vessel into which the host empties the water used to rinse bowl and whisk between servings — a quiet, utilitarian object, and yet one that tea masters have long asked to carry the same weight of attention as the chawan itself. Agano ware traces to the early seventeenth century, when the potter Sonkai was brought from Korea under the patronage of the daimyo Hosokawa Tadaoki. The kiln was soon counted among the Enshu Nanagama — the seven kilns favored by the tea master Kobori Enshu — and it absorbed his aesthetic of kirei-sabi, a refined and disciplined beauty suited to the samurai tea gatherings of the period. The glaze on this kensui belongs to that lineage: an ash glaze that pools and thins unevenly across the body, leaving passages of exposed clay where the flow stopped short. Nothing here was drawn by hand. The pattern is the residue of gravity and heat, fixed once in the kiln and never repeated. The green mirrors moss climbing old stone after rain — quiet, and still moving.
🔹 [ DEEP-DIVE COMMENTARY ]
Agano ware is defined less by ornament than by restraint. Its forms tend toward the plain and the sturdy, built to be handled daily within the choreography of a tea gathering rather than displayed at a remove. The turquoise-to-moss ash glaze seen here is achieved by layering a wood-ash base over the stoneware body and allowing it to run under kiln heat, so that thickness and color shift naturally along a single downward path. Where the glaze thins or breaks, the coarse, sand-flecked clay of the Agano region shows through directly — a deliberate contrast the kiln has favored for four centuries. For collectors, the value of a piece like this sits in its lineage as much as its surface: Agano ware carries the direct imprint of Kobori Enshu's taste, one of the most influential aesthetic sensibilities in the history of the tea ceremony, and Koshin-gama continues to work within that discipline rather than departing from it. A kensui, being functional rather than ornamental, is also comparatively rare to find signed and boxed with this level of care — most survive as anonymous utility ware. Takatsuru Chizan's continuation of the Agano tradition into the present places this vessel at the meeting point of a seventeenth-century lineage and a living kiln still firing today.
