Raku: 15 Generations of Fire
Share
In the quiet, concentrated space of a Japanese tea room, one name resonates above all others: Raku (楽). For over 450 years, the Raku family has served as the heartbeat of the Wabi-cha tradition. Unlike most ceramics that are thrown on a wheel, a Raku bowl is shaped entirely by hand—a process known as Tezukune—resulting in an object that feels less like a vessel and more like a piece of the earth itself.
Historical Context
The story of Raku begins in the late 16th century with a humble tile-maker named Chojiro and the legendary tea master Sen no Rikyu. Rikyu sought a bowl that embodied his philosophy of Wabi-sabi—beauty in simplicity, imperfection, and austerity.
The name "Raku" was bestowed upon the second generation by Toyotomi Hideyoshi, in the form of a gold seal bearing the character for "Enjoyment" (楽). Since then, each successive head has taken the name Raku, evolving the style while strictly adhering to the fundamental firing technique.

How to Appreciate Raku
1. The Depth of Black and Red
Kuro-Raku (Black) is prized for its deep, matte black that makes matcha pop with spiritual intensity. Aka-Raku (Red) offers a warm, earthy texture.
2. The Hand-Sculpted Form (Kodai)
Because Raku bowls are carved with a spatula, the Kodai (foot) reveals the raw strength and individual character of the artist.
3. The Softness of Touch
Raku is famous for its low-fired, porous body. Unlike porcelain, Raku keeps the tea hot while remaining comfortably warm to the hands.
Collector's Tip
The Seal of the Generations. Each Raku master uses a unique "Raku Seal" stamped into the bottom. However, identifying a genuine Raku requires understanding the spirit of each era—the 3rd generation Nonko's glossy glazes, the 9th generation Ryonyu's bold carving.
